Classifying living organisms

In science this half term we have been studying how living things are grouped by scientists. This follows on from the work we have done previously on food chains and food webs. We have been revising some of the main classifications (mammal / insects / reptiles / birds), learning the difference between vertebrates and inveterbrates and then thinking about different types of invertbrates.
Suggested Activities

  • You could use the Young People's Trust for the Environment (YPTE) weblink below to revise food chains and revise the main groups of invertebrates;
  • Use the BBC Bitesize link to revise the key points about classification keys;
  • Use the Simple Classification Key to revise how keys work;
  • Go on a minibeast hunt in your garden - use the information in the Minibeasts Pack to help you plan this and use the key in the pack to identify minibeasts and use the Invertebrate Classification Key to identify which type of invertebrates you find on the hunt.
