English (Literacy Tree)
Since the start of September, children have already been exposed to a variety of high quality texts and the two focus texts in Spring 2 are no exception. We start with ‘Stanley’s Stick’ by John Hegley. We follow Stanley’s story and the wonderfully creative ways that he uses his new found stick. Children will have the opportunity to use their own incredible imaginations to help them create their own journeys with a stick. Children will finish week 3 having composed their own innovative story, based around their stick and the adventure that their character is taken on.
We finish Spring 2 with ‘The Seasaw’ by Tom Percival. This is a wonderful story that allows our children to relate to the character, Sofia, who has a teddy that is very special to her that unfortunately gets left at the beach. Children have the opportunity to talk about their own special toy and give advice in the form of commands to the sea (who plans to help the bear return to Sofia). In addition to this, children also sequence the events of the story and learn to spell the days of the week and include these in a diary entry.
Maths
In Spring 2 we will continue with our unit about numbers 0-20 and look to consolidate our knowledge of additive structures, addition and subtraction within 10 and the relationships between parts and their whole.
Phonics (Little Wandle)
In Spring 2, children build upon their knowledge of Phase 5 and explore many alternative sounds and also learn new 'tricky words'
*If you are unsure on how to pronounce some of these GPCs then please ask your child's class teacher and we can support you so that you can support your child.
Science
Smell, touch, sight, hearing and taste. Our Science for this half term is a huge favourite with both children and adults. Our topic of ‘senses’ for Spring 2 lends itself to a fantastic variety of practical activities. Children get to be hands-on with some weird and wonderful textures that both intrigues their sense of touch but also adds to their ever-growing vocabulary bank as we look to describe these textures. Amongst all of the other explorative senses activities is the taste test. Children are provided with a selection of ‘green’ foods to taste, experience and then discuss their reasoning behind whether they enjoyed this food or did not! This is lesson is always a firm favourite!!
History
Our History topic when return focusses on the local history of AFC Bournemouth. We look to discuss the history of the club and how the community worked together to ‘Save the Cherries’. Alongside the footballing history, it is also a good opportunity for the children to acknowledge a contrast in the past and present versions of the club’s stadium through book, photographs and local sources.
R&W
In R&W children learn about what Christians believe and seek to answer the enquiry question: Why was Jesus welcomed like a king or celebrity by the crowds on Palm Sunday?
PSHE
For Spring 2, children discuss what age ratings mean on digital devices and content, such as on films and games. All of these entertainment activities can be fun, but not all content is suitable for everyone. Within a world that has digital devices available for children to view everywhere, it is increasingly important that children are aware of what content is suitable for them and helping them to choose this appropriately.
