Autumn 1
English (Literacy Tree)
We start Autumn 1 by exploring Cave Baby by Julia Donaldson and Emily Gravett. The children begin by sharing experiences of times they have been ‘naughty’ or done ‘naughty’ things to relate to the character of Cave Baby. We explore a variety of role play scenarios and dive straight into the text, looking at the various animals within the story. Children will know the text and be able to retell it using pictures, puppets and small world items. Children will then go on the explore the features of single-clause sentences and create their own, eventually retelling the story in sequences of sentences and writing in role.
Our next story is Astro Girl by Ken Wilson-Max. Children will stumble upon a mysterious backpack and discuss who they think it belongs to and deduce that the owner might be an astronaut. Children will continue to write in role, creating commands in the format of a 'how to' guide. They collaborate to pose questions and write predictions as responses before finding out the end of the story. We work together to create space leaflets and look to develop upon our space knowledge from EYFS.
Maths
Our first two Maths units this year will be: Comparison of quantities and part-whole relationships and Numbers 0-5. In Year 1 we follow the NCETM Curriculum Map.
Phonics (Little Wandle)
In phonics, children will be building upon their knowledge of phonics from EYFS. In Autumn 1 we look to review similar content from EYFS in the first few weeks before introducing all of the new Year 1 graphemes.
*If you are unsure on how to pronounce some of these GPCs then please ask your child's class teacher and we can support you so that you can support your child.
