English (Literacy Tree)

This half term, our English learning begins with the wonderful Usborne "That's Not My..." book series. These engaging stories provide a fantastic introduction to descriptive language and help children develop their vocabulary through a range of sensory experiences.

The children will explore different objects and textures, using their senses to describe how things look and feel. Together, we will learn and discuss simple adjectives such as soft, rough, smooth and fluffy, helping the children build confidence in describing the world around them.

As the half term progresses, the children will practise using these adjectives in simple sentences. They will learn to say, read and write descriptions, developing their early sentence-writing skills.

We will then move on to the story The Full Stop That Got Away. This fun and engaging text introduces children to the importance of correct sentence punctuation. The children will follow the full stop on its journey and discover what happens when it is missing from a sentence.

Using the story as inspiration, we will learn about the features of a simple sentence, including using a capital letter at the beginning and a full stop at the end. Through shared writing, sentence-building activities and independent writing opportunities, the children will practise writing their own simple sentences and checking that every sentence ends with a full stop.

Our final story of Autumn 1 is Astro Girl by Ken Wilson-Max. Children will stumble upon a mysterious backpack and discuss who they think it belongs to and deduce that the owner might be an astronaut. Children will continue to write in role, creating commands in the format of a 'how to' guide. They collaborate to pose questions and write predictions as responses before finding out the end of the story. We work together to create space leaflets and look to develop upon our space knowledge from EYFS.

 

 

Maths

Our first two Maths units this year will be: Comparison of quantities and part-whole relationships and Numbers 0-5. In Year 1 we follow the NCETM Curriculum Map. 

 

 

 

Phonics (Little Wandle)

In phonics, children will be building upon their knowledge of phonics from EYFS. In Autumn 1 we look to review similar content from EYFS in the first few weeks before introducing all of the new Year 1 graphemes.
